Getting around Cambridge
Emmanuel College is located in the very centre of Cambridge (right at the centre of the
Map) .
The central part of Cambridge is rather small and
is best explored on foot. Alternatively you can hire a bicycle from various outlets
(e.g. the station). All hotels/guest houses/B&Bs listed in the
accommodation section are within easy walking distance of Emmanuel College.
Getting to Cambridge
The closest of the London airports is
Stansted. However there are very few transatlantic flights. Flights to
London
Heathrow (LHR) and
Gatwick (LGW) airports are equally convenient.
Getting from London Heathrow to Cambridge
There are a number of options:
- Underground/Rail
Take the underground (Metro) from London Heathrow to King's Cross Station
(Piccadilly Line). Underground trains leave every 5 minutes and the journey
to King's Cross takes about 55 minutes. Do not take the
Heathrow Express as you will need to take another underground train
to get to King's Cross. Take the train from King's Cross to Cambridge
( timetable ). The
fast (i.e. direct non-stopping) trains leave every 30 minutes. From the Station
you can either pick up a taxi or walk to your hotel.
Note the last train from King's Cross to Cambridge
leaves at about midnight. If your flight arrives late at night you
might want to consider taking the coach.
- Coach (Bus)
Buses to Cambridge leave
roughly every hour (sometimes more frequently).
The scheduled journey time is about 2 hours 40 minutes.
Because of heavy traffic around London, the actual
departure and journey times of these buses are sometimes very different to the times
listed in the timetable. You just have to locate the correct bus stop
and then wait for one to come. The bus station is just around the corner from
Emmanuel College.
- Road
On leaving Heathrow Take the M4 (direction London) and after a couple of
miles take the M25 Northwards (sign-posted Luton, Stansted, Harlow). After
40 miles of crawling around the M25 take the M11 exit (sign-posted Cambridge and Stansted).
After 40 miles on the M11 take exit 11 towards Cambridge South. This brings you
into the centre of Cambridge along Trumpington St. (bottom of the
Map).
Having a car once in Cambridge isn't particularly
useful - its often quicker to walk .
