Cambridge HEP Group - current developments
November 2000
Hardware
- New departmental network installed over last 9 months. Now have switched
100Mbps ethernet on all UTP ports in the group. Backbone is 1Gbps star
configuration over fibre.
- Very little else has changed since March - a few more PCs, VMS no longer
used for serious work, but otherwise "steady as she goes".
- In next few months, likely to start building an analysis farm, including
a disk server (1-2TB??) - NA48, ATLAS and LHCb are driving the requirements.
Software
- Linux updated to Redhat 6.1. ARLA rather than Transarc for AFS (kernel
version issues), but it seems a bit flaky.
- Other software platforms unchanged. No short term plans for Windows
2000 (we aren't currently permitted to put W2000 servers on our network
anyway).
