Research Interests

Parton Distribution Functions
Member of the MSTW (Martin-Stirling-Watts-Thorne) collaboration producing state-of-the-art parton distribution functions (pdfs) for use at high-energy particle colliders such as the Tevatron and LHC. The latest MSTW2008 LO, NLO and NNLO sets are described in arXiv:0901.0002, see also arXiv:0905.3531 and arXiv:1007.2624 . Further information and pdf codes can be found on the MSTW page on HepForge. Beyond the Standard Model Phenomenology

Central Exclusive Production
The study of exclusive processes pp → M pp at the Tevatron and LHC, where M is a heavy colour singlet object or final state. This can be an important source of (SM and SUSY) Higgs bosons and other exotic new particles at the LHC. The theoretical formalism is, however, not as developed as for standard inclusive hard scattering, and therefore benchmarking with Tevatron data is important. See for example arXiv:hep-ph/0403218, arXiv:0708.3052 and arXiv:0909.4748. The KRYSTHAL (Khoze/RYskin/STirling/HArland-Lang) collaboration has developed a publicly available Monte Carlo event generator, SuperCHIC, for simulating χ_c, η_c, χ_b and η_b production at RHIC, Tevatron and the LHC. Double Parton Scattering
The theory and phenomenology of high-energy hadron collider processes in which the final state arises from two or more simultaneous hard-scattering parton-parton collisions, for example W⁺W⁺ and W^-W^-production at the LHC, see arXiv:1003.3953. We have developed a consistent set of double parton distributions, GSO9, see arXiv:0910.4347 and the GSdPDF page on HepForge.

The QCD and Collider Physics Book
A detailed overview of high-energy collider physics emphasising the role of QCD. Topics covered include the QCD Lagrangian, the properties of asymptotic freedom and colour confinement which derive from it, jets, heavy quarks, electroweak gauge bosons, Higgs bosons and methods of measuring the strong coupling constant. The authors (Keith Ellis, James Stirling, Bryan Webber) maintain a home page for the book, which lists updates and corrections. The book can be purchased from amazon.co.uk and all good booksellers.
