LBIC/CDP Readout of Irradiated Detectors

A schematic of the setup is shown here. Click here for a colour photograph of one of the irradiated Hamamatsu barrel detectors bonded to hybrid no.5, together with the support card. A photograph of a close up of the bonding scheme is shown here. The detector frames (& ceramics) are unchanged from the FELIX setup but we needed a new pitch adaptor to ensure that each CDP (and pair of LBICs) is connected exclusively to either 6cm or 12cm strips (unlike with the FELIX readout which had mixed 6cm and 12cm regions) to avoid the problem of regions of different common mode in the same binary chip. Pitch adaptor "2" is a replaceable straight one-to-one at 100um pitch, similar to before. Pitch adaptor "3" is a LBIC->100um pitch converter. Note the hybrid is glued to an aluminium plate mounted in its own frame, with the support card housed separately to overcome bonding machine limitations. Although we now have three frames bolted together each institute now needs only one support card, even if they have two hybrids.

The design of the pitch adaptors can be obtained from here (2.5Mbyte postscript). Dave Robinson designed the detector pitch adaptor, and Phil Turner designed the hybrid pitch adaptors. The new design ensures all 768 channels are read out using 4 CDPs / 8 LBICs.

ABCD Readout of Irradiated Detectors

A to-scale drawing of the re-bondable binary module with the ABCD hybrid can be viewed by clicking here (postscript file). A prototype has been fabricated at Cambridge. The scheme makes use of the 50->80um pitch adaptor that is used as a standard feature for these hybrids when bonded to detectors in a centre-tap module. A new pitch adaptor F is required to convert 80->100um pitch and to route the connections in line with those on the detector pitch adaptor (type D - which is essentially unchanged from 1997). A "robust" pcb connector fixed adjacent to the hybrid on the support frame avoids the need to disconnect the hybrid kapton. Photographs of the prototype module are available below:

Drawings of the new pitch adaptors are listed below:

ATLAS SCT Barrel Module QA

We are setting up facilities for the Quality Control tests of SCT barrel modules after their assembly at RAL. This section will be updated soon.
