Serial Cables

A very large quantity of serial cables. All have a large serial connector on each end (always one male and one female). There are four very high quality cables (lengths 17m, 5m, 11m and 3m) and two low quality cables (lengths 2m and 7m) which were last used about 10 years ago to run to VT220 terminal below. The high quality cables are very much thicker than the low quality ones -- I suspect that the high quality cables may have most if not all of the pins connected, whereas the low quality cables probably only have the approx 6 wires connected that are necessary to make an RS232 connection.

VT220 serial terminal - made by Digital

This is VT220 dumb serial terminal. It was used for many years in my student kitchen as a machine for browsing the web on Lynx to obtain cooking recipes! The kitchen was many meters away from the host computer, hence the large quantity of serial cable also on offer above. Worked when last used (about 8 years ago) but not tested since.

IBM Model 5155 Portable Personal Computer

When this machine is plugged in and turned on, a sound (resembling a relay) clicks within ~1/5 of a second, and the machine makes no further sound and shows no further sign of life. Possibly dead PS? Both this machine and the machine below worked before they went into storage about 15 years ago, though I can't remember which machine still had a bootable OS on the hard drive. They both had bootable OS's on the hard drive when originally obtained (about 20 years ago) but I seem to remember one of them lost its OS when I made a botched attempt to install MS DOS 5 on it from floppy. Thereafter the botched machine could boot off a floppy but I don't think it ever booted off its HD again, though the HD was still usable. The non-botched machine had a working MS DOS installation on the HD. Case of this IBM is still in good condition for age.

Unknown XT Portable Personal Computer (640k)

When this machine is plugged in and turned on, it gets through the bios check OK (and demonstrates a working screen) but seems to hang when attempting to boot an OS off the HD. Have not tested boot off floppy. Note that the photo showing less than 640k memory was taken part way through the memory check. The case of this machine needs some patience to get back into its locating holes -- I can't be bothered so it has the case duct-taped together - also a screening plate is loose inside.
