The National Particle Physics Masterclass March/April 1999

Sixth formers studying physics and their teachers are invited to spend a day experiencing the excitement of particle physics at one of a series of Masterclasses being held at universities through out the country during March and April 1999. The day-long classes will be a mixture of talks and practical sessions.

For 1999, a particular focus of the Masterclasses will be the BaBar experiment at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Laboratory in California, where UK physicists and their colleagues hope to begin data-taking in April 1999. This experiment will make detailed studies of particles containing heavy b quarks, with the aim of discovering more about puzzle of the Universe's missing antimatter.

Students will also gain hands-on experience of the interactive graphical display programs that particle physicists use at the European Laboratory for Particle Physics (CERN) in Geneva. The laboratory's foremost machine is the Large Electron Positron Collider (LEP), and students will be able to study real particle collisions from this machine, including events from the most recent run, with LEP operating at its highest energy so far.

Other practical activities will allow students to make their own measurements of particle tracks, using software specially designed for schools. There will also be other activities that will vary from one university to another.

The Masterclasses are being organised by the High Energy Particle Physics Group of the Institute of Physics.

This event is now taking place for the third time, following the successes of the last two years. You can read here what the Times Education Supplement, Physics World and the Frontiers wrote about the 1997 event.

Dates vary throughout the country, but all are between late March and the end of April. For more information please contact your nearest participating university directly, as seen in the following list (blanks are being rapidly filled in...)
