Travel to and from Cambridge

and the Cavendish Laboratory

Click to get road map of the Cambridge area or an expanded one which is more local. Here is a street map of Cambridge city-centre. We also have a plan of the Cavendish Laboratory itself.

The Cavendish Laboratory is on the Madingley Road to the west of the city.  You can get from Peterhouse to the Cavendish by following the map here (the Cavendish Laboratory unfortunately is off the map, on the left straight on from Burrel Walk).  A suggested route would be to walk towards town from Peterhouse along Trumpington Street, turning left onto Silver Street. Walk over the bridge, by Queens' College and turn right onto Queen's Road. When you reach the zebra crossing by Burrell's way, turn left onto this path and carry on past the University Library. Cross Grange Road and walk down Adam's Road (with Robinson College on your left). When you reach the end carry on onto the Coton footpath, and carry on down until you reach the Cavendish, as shown on this map.

All visitors should first report to the reception in the main entrance to the Bragg Building (the middle building of three) to obtain a visitor's badge, for security reasons. The HEP group lives in the Rutherford Building (the northernmost building, closest to Madingley Road).

Arriving at Peterhouse

On arrival in Cambridge you should report to the Peterhouse Porters Lodge in order to collect your room key and directions to your room. The Porters lodge is located at the main entrance. The college is open late (until around 11pm or 12pm). After this the Porters Lodges are still manned and you should ring the bell for assistance.

By Train

The timetable for Cambridge-London trains can be found here. Trains run from both King's Cross and Liverpool Street stations in London. A more extensive information service for train timetables over the whole country is now provided by National Rail at this location . Cambridge station is about 5 km from the Cavendish - it is best to take a taxi. The taxi rank is located about 100 metres along Station Road, on the right-hand side.

By Bus/Coach

Most national coach companies visit Cambridge and in all cases arrive at the main bus station in Drummer Street, in the centre of Cambridge. From the bus station it is at least a 20 minute walk to the Cavendish (via Burrell's Walk and the Coton footpath - see map ), or you can take a taxi.

By Car

Parking is very difficult near to Peterhouse itself, but possible at the Cavendish. Please let us know if you wish to make use of this so we can arrange permission.

The Cavendish Laboratory is south of the Madingley Road (A1303) along JJ Thomson Avenue marked with a sign to "University West Cambridge Site and Veterinary School". The Cavendish is on the left after about 150 metres.

Coming from the South, you will probably come up the M11. Leave at junction 13, turn right along the A1303. The Cavendish is on the right after about 1 km.

Coming from the North, you should come on the A14 (formerly A604). Take the A1307 exit for Cambridge. You enter along the Huntingdon Road. Turn right, just after the 30 m.p.h. signs, along Storey's Way (beware of the traffic-calming measures - a narrow width restriction on a right-angled bend), then right when you reach the Madingley Road (A1303), to find the Cavendish on the left.

An alternative longer, but simpler, route from the A14 is to take the M11 exit towards London and continue on to junction 12. (Junction 13 has no exit for southbound traffic.) Leave the M11, turn right at the roundabout on to the A603, cross over the M11 and turn right at another roundabout to rejoin the M11 northbound. Leave at junction 13, turn right along the A1303. The Cavendish is on the right after about 1 km.

Coming from the West, you will probably come on either the A14 (see above) or the A428 (formerly A45) from Bedford. Take the A1303 as you approach Cambridge, and you will be on the Madingley Road, with the Cavendish on the right before you enter the city.

By Air

Cambridge Airport has scheduled services to Manchester and Amsterdam only.

The closest of the London airports is Stansted. There are a limited number of cities with flights to Stansted, which at the moment does NOT include any flights to or from Geneva with EasyJet. Buses run approximately hourly to Cambridge, taking about 45 minutes. There is also a train service from Stansted Airport Station to Cambridge, taking about 30 minutes.

There are also a limited number of cities with flights to London City Airport, on the eastern side of London. A direct scheduled service from Geneva is operated by the Swiss airline Crossair. There is a shuttlebus service running every 20 minutes between City Airport and Liverpool Street station (about 25 minutes journey time) from where there are trains to Cambridge. There is also a shuttlebus service to Canning Town every 5 minutes (journey time 5 minutes) from where you can take the Underground or the Docklands Light Railway into central Londom (this can be quicker than the Liverpool Street bus service during rush hours).

London Luton Airport also has services from a limited range of cities. However, it is especially well served by EasyJet from Geneva. There is a bus service every two hours from the airport to Cambridge.

London Heathrow and Gatwick airports are both served by hourly buses to Cambridge. The scheduled journey time is about two hours from Heathrow and three hours from Gatwick. Because of heavy traffic around London, the actual departure times of these buses are sometimes very different to the times listed in the timetable. You just have to locate the correct bus stop and then wait for one to come. Alternatively, you can take the underground from Heathrow or a train from Gatwick to central London, and then a train to Cambridge. Either train or bus takes about the same time to get to Cambridge.
