Backup Procedures

A selection of the disks are backed-up regularly. We use a LTO7 autoloader attached to pclk for the backups. The capacity of the tapes are roughly 6TB native, but the autoloader has hardware compression and a factor of 2:1 is usual with text files, so we might expect to get about 12TB on a tape when user text files are involved. Most experiments' data files are already compressed, and with these we can't gain anything over the native capacity.

We are happy to backup files outside the regular regime. Users should normally approach Julia, but any of the local administrators will help you out. Please remember that disks DO fail occasionally - if you have important data on disk, and don't have a backup somewhere, then you are asking for trouble - request a backup!

The regular backups are usually done overnight to minimise the effect on normal operation. One-off backups will be done when it is most convenient.
